Michiel Ophovius – Peter Paul Rubens

Oil painting on canvas – first half of the 18th century

There are a number of replicas of this painting and it is not clear whether they were executed by Rubens himself or by his studio with the help of his assistants and only finished by Rubens himself.

The portrait depicts a friend of Peter Paul Rubens, Michiel Ophovius (1570-1637), who was the Dominican prior of the monastery of St. Paul in Antwerp.
