Don Bosco – Mario Caffaro Rore

We have had the great privilege of working on a series of works by Mario Caffaro Rore, portraying Don Giovanni Bosco and San Domenico Savio. In particular the half-length painting of St John Bosco, the most famous and most reproduced portrait.

Saint Domenico Savio is portrayed at his First Communion and in altar boy’s clothes, works dating back to 1952.

Restoration involved cleaning the paint layer and revising the surface, which was affected by slight abrasions and small gaps. The thin layer of paint was altered and yellowed, which was removed for proper restoration.

Mario Caffaro Rore (26 February 1910 Turin, 15 June 2001)
He attended the Liceo Artistico and the Accademia Albertina in Turin, with the masters Giacomo Grosso, Cesare Ferro, Luigi Rigorini and Michele Guerrisi. From his youthful apprenticeship in stained glass, he moved on to sacred themes for churches.

His most important clients were the Salesians, for whom he created the faces of Don Bosco and San Domenico Savio.
He painted portraits and many altarpieces for the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
